Ulaanbaatar, October 1, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Today marks the International Day of Older Persons.

The United Nations first proclaimed the observance of the day in 1990, and Mongolia has celebrated it annually since 1992, making this year the 34th occasion. Older persons account for 9.0 percent of Mongolia’s total population, of whom 40.2 percent are men and 59.8 percent are women. The proportion is projected to reach 11.9 percent by 2030, and by 2050, one in every five citizens will be aged 60 or above. The oldest person in the country is 107 years old. Currently, 68.7 percent of older persons reside in urban areas, while the remainder live in rural regions.

According to a survey conducted by the Mongolian Association of Elderly People (MAEP), 16.7 percent of the elderly population, equivalent to 28,200 individuals, live in households below the subsistence minimum. In addition, 3,963 older persons live alone without family support, 7,815 have disabilities or are bedridden, and 18,400 require constant care.
