The research team of Mongolia-Japan Joint Expedition Project ‘The Inscription’ has uncovered that Chinggis Khaan’s military stronghold along the entrance to Central Asia - Chinhai is located in Khalzan Shireg site, Sharga soum of Gobi-Altai province.

Project leaders, Mongolian scholars A.Ochir and L.Erdenebold and Japanese scholars Hitoshi Muraoka, Yuko Nakata and Takashi Matsukawa held a press conference today at the press center of MONTSAME news agency to announce the results of their research. Funded by Japanese Ryukoku University, the research team continued its field research this year, advancing the comprehensive study on Chinhai ruins.

A place named Chinhai is cited in a historic source named ‘Notes of Changchun Bumba’, a well known Daoist who met Chinggis Khan in person. Khalzan Shireg is along the Silk Road in the west of China, and also the Steppe Route which reaches Central Asia through Altai Mountain range from China. Therefore, Chinhai has been proved to be an important trade point.

Launched in 1994, the ‘Inscription’ is a major archaeological project in its 23th year, studying inscriptions and shining monuments from ancient Turkic state to the Great Mongol Empire.
