Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Mongolian Khuree Tsam was performed fully and successfully for the third time on the second day of religious & cultural event Danshig Naadam, August 6.

The Khuree Tsam is performed by over 100 people wearing enormous and glorious masks and heavy ornaments and dancing as different characters and deities in order to subdue malevolent spirits, purify external environment, eradicate disease, suffering, war, famine and hardship, and spread auspiciousness. The religious ritual is performed for 6-8 hours in its full form.

Tsam performance is essentially the main element of Danshig Naadam which was first celebrated in 1639 for the enthronement of Zanabazar as the first Bogd Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, and was revived in 2015 in commemoration of his 380th birth anniversary.

The Buddhist ritual Tsam dance was introduced to Mongolia around the 18th century. The first Tsam was performed in Ikh Khuree in 1811; thus, the Mongolian Tsam dance was later called ‘Ikh Khuree Tsam’.
