UB’s public buses to use natural gas

Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/‘Ulaanbaatar Development Corporation (UBDC)’ JSC is working to commence a project ‘Natural gas as a clean fuel for Ulaanbaatar city public transportation system’. In this regard, an agreement of cooperation was established on December 6 to implement the project with funding of the Republic of Korea. The agreement was signed by S. Sod-Erdene, CEO of ‘UBDC’ JSC, and Il Gyo Lee, Vice President of ‘Woojin RDC’ Company.
According to the project, a natural gas use will be introduced into public transportation system of Ulaanbaatar city by 2nd quarter of next year. The project implementation will be executed by ‘Ulaanbaatar natural gas’ LLC which will be specially established for the project.
UBDC JSC’s CEO S. Sod-Erdene said, “Under an ordinance of the Governor of capital city and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar, a resolution was passed to implement a project to use eco-friendly technology and natural gas in municipal public transportation system. Within the project, investment worth MNT28.4 billion was resolved under public and private partnership. Regarding logistics, natural gas stations will be built in Ulaanbaatar. The municipal administration is taking step by step activities to reduce air pollution. So as to resolve poisonous smoke and soot emitted from public transportation buses with eco-friendly technology, the project is going to be implemented to use natural gas (LNG-CNG) in integration with upgrading depot of public transportation in Ulaanbaatar city.”
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission by the vehicles is estimated to be 11 percent or 1,680,000 tons in a year. 994 public buses in operation contribute 6 percent or 839,958 ton of total GHG emission.
Il Gyo Lee said, “Implementation of this project is believed to contribute to reduce air pollution of Ulaanbaatar city. Introducing natural gas into the public transportation system is the first step of this project. Further, it will expand its activities, including an introduction of natural gas into ger area.”
