Mongolians demand more actions against child abuse

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Mongolians raised their voices and demanded more resolute action against child abuse at a march held on March 31.

The peaceful march themed ‘We won't Tolerate Anymore’ took place in the capital city, provincial centers of 14 aimags and some countries around the world as Mongolians came united under the common concern over the increasing incidence of serious crimes against children in the society.

A data by the State General Prosecutor's Office of Mongolia reveals that 298 cases of sexual abuse of children were registered last year. There is no official report and statistics on the exact number of child abuse victims aside from the cases registered.

Parents, non-government organizations and associations and celebrities joined together holding signs that said ‘End Child Abuse’, ‘We won’t Tolerate Child Abuse Anymore’, ‘Open your eyes’, ‘Every Little Beating Heart Must Be Happy’ and ‘Stop Stealing a Child’s Future’. Mongolians in Hungary, Sweden, France, the Russian Federation, the United States, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the Republic of Korea also expressed their support of the peaceful march.

More than 10 thousand people partook in the march, either in person and from distance, sources say. According to the organizers, 15,890 people signed a document demanding justice for children, which would be delivered to the Government.

The organizers demanded more strict punishment for the culprits of crimes against children, improvement of the legal environment to restrict culprits’ chance of lessening their sentence, limit the number of hotels and strengthen the regulations. The response is expected within seven days.

The Facebook group against child abuse has more than 410 thousand members.
