Radio programme on artist G.Ariunbaatar nominated for the Prix Europa
Art & CultureUlaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. A documentary radio programme called ‘From the Steppes to the Stage’ about the State Honored Artist, Laureate of the Order of Chinggis Khan G.Ariunbaatar was aired earlier this year on BBC Radio 4. The presenter Kate Molleson and producer Steven Rajam, who made the programme, have recently been nominated for the Prix Europa, which is awarded annually to the 5 best journalists and programmes of the year.
The
one-hour programme featured the State Honored Artist G.Ariunbaatar, his parents,
teacher, vocal coach Mary King, who was moved to tears by his performance of
Mongolian Steppe as well as it involved the author of the book ‘Mongolian
Music, Dance and Oral Narrative’, ethnomusicologist Carole Pegg and head of the
National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet Ch.Munkhzul--even the English
speaking tipsy young men who ran into outside the bar and many more.
The
programme starts with Mongolian throat singing and ends with a song by the
group ‘Soyol-Erdene’, all of the main elements of music that is played in
Mongolia, such as long song (urtiin duu), morin khuur, the main theme of Uran
Khas ballet, dembee and aria, were included in the documentary programme.
Experts
considered the programme, which included a wide range of music of Mongolia
despite having the main focus on G.Ariunbaatar, as a reflection of the Mongolian
music world.
