Within the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-supported technical assistance
project implemented by the Asian Development Bank for the management and reuse
of decentralized sludge (TA-9100-MON), pit latrines of gher area households in
Arvaikheer soum of Uvurkhangai aimag were improved into ecological.
With USD89
thousand, funded by the project, eco-pit latrines with concrete internal layer
that cause little pollution to soil and environment were built for 80
households of the soum.
The pit latrines are a primary cause of soil pollution in
Mongolia. There are 7750 households in Arvaikheer soum, of whom 6200 households
use unimproved pit latrines that pollute the soil and ground water and are a
health risk to the people who use them.
