Mongolia’s women team qualified for quarters of FIBA 3x3 U-23 World

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. The FIBA 3x3 Under-23 World Cup 2019, a 3x3 youth international tournament was held in Lanzhou city of China last week. Both Mongolian women and men’s teams achieved great success at this year’s FIBA 3x3 Under-23 World Cup, gaining several victories in each of their pool stages against world leading teams. 


In the women’s draw, Mongolia’s women’s 3x3 team played with German, Iranian, Ugandan and Romanian teams. In their first games of the Pool C, the Mongolian women’s team won the Iranian /21-15/ and Ugandan /19-15/ teams and was defeated by Romanian team /20-21/, to be still successfully qualified for the knockout stage. 


The highlight of the Mongolia’s games in the pool stage was their battle with the German team where the Mongolian team put their remarkable potential on display and defeated one of the best four of the FIBA 3x3 Under-23 World Cup 2018 with 13-11 victory over Germany. However, in the next bracket stage, the Mongolia’s 3x3 women team was defeated by a Belarusian team /10-21/, becoming not able to continue to the finals of the tournament. Regardless of their elimination, the Mongolia’s 3x3 women team was ranked at the sixth place in the final standings and opened new pages for the country’s accomplishments on 3x3 world stage. 


In men’s category, in spite of their earlier losses to Serbian and the Netherlands teams, Mongolian men’s 3x3 team defeated the Lithuanian and South Korean teams in their Pool D games. The team finished the tournament with final standing at the tenth place out of 20 teams competed at the FIBA 3x3 U-23 World Cup.
