Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The State Emergency Commission (SEC) decided to purchase Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine, which replaces the function of lungs or provides support for blood circulation, from the money donated by individuals and entities.
ECMO is an extracorporeal technique of providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support to persons whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange or perfusion to sustain life. The technology for ECMO is largely derived from cardiopulmonary bypass, which provides shorter-term support with arrested native circulation.
This intervention has mostly been used on children, but it is seeing more use in adults with cardiac and respiratory failure, especially in treatment of viral pneumonia caused by the COVID-19 infection.
The World Health Organization advises to use ECMO to treat patient with cardiac and respiratory failure especially in treatment of viral pheuonia caused caused by the Coronaviurs. And when the COVID-19 spreads around the world, there is a necessity to purchase ECMO machine, which costs MNT 350 million, to ensure preparedness of the health sector. Subsidiary devices that cost MNT 37 million is used for one patient to use the machine.
Therefore, the Ministry of Health sent its request to the SEC to buy one ECMO machine together with its subsidiary devices for treatment on 10 patients. Discussing the request, the SEC resolved to cover the required MNT 720 million for the purchase from the donation money.
The equipment is manufactured in Germany, Japan and Italy.
