19 adult beavers relocated in territory of Erdene soum of Tuv aimag

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ In aims of protecting ecosystem of Tuul River and regulating river’s flow with its natural way, 36 Eurasian beavers of 18 families have been brought from Russia and Germany in 2012 and being raised.


As part of breeding and relocating beaver, a total of 38 beavers have been relocated in 2012-2019 in Zaan and Terelj rivers, which are waterhead and its flow of Tuul River.


As they gave the largest number of offspring or 21 offspring this year compared to the previous years, Gorkhi-Terelj Natural Complex Protection Administration in collaboration with scholars and scientists of the National University of Mongolia have relocated 19 adult beavers of 8 families in territory of the 2nd bagh (smallest administration unit) of Erdene soum of Tuv aimag. Motion detector cameras also have been installed in locations where beavers have been relocated.


According to the Law on Fauna of Mongolia, beavers are subject to threatened species and the rodent’s hunting prohibited since 1930.


There are two species of the beaver namely North American beaver (Castor Canadensis) and Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) and Eurasian beaver has several subspecies in it. A subspecies named yellow beaver inhibits in Mongolia.
