Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. At the plenary session of the State Great Khural, the parliament of Mongolia, held on January 20, 2021, the parliament resolution on setting the date for the 2021 Presidential Election was discussed and approved.

According to the draft resolution, based on Article 25.1.3 of the Constitution of Mongolia and Article 8.1 and 8.2 of the Law on Presidential Elections of Mongolia, the voting day for the President of Mongolia is scheduled for June 9, 2021, Wednesday. Preparation activities for the presidential election will be launched on January 25, 2021.

The Parliament of Mongolia last month decided to organize the eighth quadrennial presidential election together with the by-election in the 28th constituency of the eighth parliament elections in Songinokhairkhan district of Ulaanbaatar city on the same day.

Member of Parliament D.Sumiyabazar, who was elected from the 28th constituency on 2020 parliamentary elections, was dismissed from the legislative position at his own request on October 23, 2020, making necessary to organize a by-poll in his constituency to fill the office that has become vacant. Sumiyabazar has been serving as Mayor of Ulaanbaatar since October 26, 2020.

The issue on the election date was reviewed on January 19 at the meeting of parliament’s Standing Committee on State Structures. Committee Chair MP L.Enkh-Amgalan introduced that it was estimated about MNT 28 billion (approx. 9.8 million USD) would be needed to organize the presidential election on its own, and about MNT 1 billion will be required for the by-election in the 28th parliamentary constituency. Therefore, in order to save costs, the by-elections of the State Great Khural will be held together with the regular 2021 Presidential election, introduced MP Enkh-Amgalan.
