Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. On November 4, the resolution on “Literacy for Life,” initiated by Mongolia and co-authored by 115 countries,
was approved by public consensus at the Third Committee Meeting of the 77th
session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Recognizing that literacy is a foundation for lifelong learning,
a building block for achieving human rights and fundamental freedoms, and a
driver of sustainable development, and had a catalytic effect as a global
framework for sustained and focused efforts for the promotion of literacy and
literate environments.
The 4.6th goal of sustainable development includes the issue of
literacy education for young people and adults, but now this goal has been
implemented by 87%. For example, 90% of men and 83% of women in the world are
literate, but 770 million adults are illiterate. In this resolution,
decision-makers are urged to take into account the fact that the number of 244
million children and youth worldwide who are not enrolled in school has not
changed much in the last decade, but the situation has worsened due to the
effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Takes note of the Transforming Education Summit, convened by the Secretary-General of UN Antonio Guterres, and welcomes the establishment of the United Nations Youth Office to support ongoing efforts towards mobilizing financial and technical support and investment to promote and upscale quality and inclusive education and training.
Mongolia initiated the “Literacy for Life” resolution in 2002
and updates every two years since for approval of the UN General Assembly.
