Vaccines Provided for Prevention of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreaks
SocietyUlaanbaatar, April 14, 2023 /MONTSAME/. For the prevention of foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in Mongolia, the Livestock Commercialization project (LCP) handed over 6.5 million doses of vaccines to the General Authority for Veterinary Services on April 12.
The project funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations supports the control of food-and-mouth disease through the adoption of a risk-based ‘cattle-and-yak-only’ vaccination strategy, in cooperation with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry (MOFALI) and the General Authority for Veterinary Services.
Initial vaccination was carried out in April 2022 and three
months later, LCP supported the assessment of immunity through a nationwide
serological study. The results indicated that cattle and yaks in more than 96
percent of all soums were protected against foot-and-mouth disease. However, foot-and-mouth
disease vaccines protect for only six months. Therefore, a second round of
vaccination took place in November 2022 and is now due again.
The vaccination is intended to support the implementation
of the national foot-and-mouth disease control strategy for 2022-2028.
