Discussing Solutions to Combat Desertification in the Gobi Region

Ulaanbaatar, September 17, 2024 /MONTSAME/. On September 13, 2024, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with “Oyu Tolgoi” LLC and the Governor’s Office of Umnugobi aimag, held an international scientific conference on "A Green Future to Combat Desertification” in Dalanzadgad soum, Umnugobi aimag. 


Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Mongolia Odontuya Saldan opened the Conference, emphasizing Mongolia’s fight against land degradation and desertification. The Conference was particularly significant as it was organized in anticipation of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) that will take place in Mongolia in 2026. 


Over 200 participants, including leading experts, scientists, policymakers, local citizens and representatives of projects and enterprises, attended the Conference and shared the latest research findings. Additionally, the participants discussed the consequences of desertification and climate change in the Gobi region of Mongolia and the possible solutions to combat the issues while exchanging experiences.


“Oyu Tolgoi” LLC plans to organize an international scientific conference under the topic “Gobi” annually.
