Ulaanbaatar, April 8, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The Mongolian Chess Federation and the Asian Chess Federation will jointly organize the Asia Zone 3.3 Championship on April 22, 2025, at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Ulaanbaatar. The five-day Championship will bring together players from more than 10 countries.
The Open Qualifier to select Mongolia’s top players for the Championships began on April 7, 2025, at the Independence Palace. A total of 160 chess players are participating, and the top 20 male and 20 female players will earn the right to compete in the Asia Zone 3.3 Championship.
President of the Mongolian Chess Federation Zandanshatar Gombojav noted, “We are witnessing a tournament of great importance, one that will open a new chapter in the history of Mongolian chess. The Asian Zonal Chess Championship, organized continuously since 1960, is set to be held in our country for the second time after seven years. In 2023, Grandmaster S. Bilguun claimed victory at the Asian Zonal Championship held in Indonesia. We hope that our chess players will maintain this success and bring home the gold trophy. As this tournament paves the way to the illustrious World Cup, I believe it will broaden the aspirations of not only professional players but also up-and-coming junior players, making competition ever more intense.”
At the 1960 Asian Zonal Chess Championship, Master of Sports of Mongolia Muumuu Suren participated for the first time and won a bronze medal. Then in 1966, Myagmarsuren Lkhamsuren became the first Mongolian to win the championship title, earning the International Master title. Mongolia first hosted the Asia Zone 3.3 Championship in 2019, where International Master S. Gan-Erdene and Grandmaster B. Munguntuul performed successfully and qualified for the World Cup.
