Ulaanbaatar, May 12, 2025 /MONTSAME/. May 12 is celebrated around the world as International Nurses Day, with Mongolia observing this day dedicated to nurses since 1995. On Nurses Day, a broad range of activities is organized to enhance, publicize, and honor nurses’ professional skills and knowledge, and to support academic research. It is estimated that Mongolia has more than 11,000 nurses today. The day is meant to take pride in and express gratitude to nurses. It is a day to honor nurses who remain faithful to their oath to safeguard public health and provide continuous medical care under all circumstances.
British nurse and teacher Florence Nightingale, known worldwide as the “Lady with the Lamp,” is celebrated as the founder of modern nursing, and her birthday, May 12, was designated “International Nurses Day” by the International Council of Nurses. While working during the Crimean War in the 1850s, she laid the scientific groundwork for nursing.
The word “nursing” originates from concepts of compassion and care. The practice of nursing comprises five stages, which are assessing a patient’s condition, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating. A nurse’s knowledge can be categorized as essential, necessary, and useful, while skills include hands‑on proficiency, decision‑making, communication, and teamwork abilities. Nursing requires a dedicated attitude, as well as a genuine desire to help, compassion, and a sincere approach.
