Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. On December 27, Economics Journalism Club hosted a discussion under the theme renewable energy in Mongolia. Around 7.1 percent of Mongolia’s total energy consumption comes from renewable energy resources.

General engineer of the National Renewable Energy Center state owned enterprise E.Bayarjargal delivered presentation on the current situation of renewable energy in Mongolia, including the Mongolian national target to supply 30 percent of total energy demand from renewables by 2030 within the framework of the Sustainable Development Concept – 2030.

Highlighting that it is feasible to reach the target to bring the renewable supply at 20 percent in 2020, Mr. E.Bayarjargal said that building solar power plant in the southern part of Mongolia, especially in Dornogobi and Umnugobi aimags, where average sunshine hours is higher, will yield great results. "The fact that Mongolia enjoys 270-300 sunny days per year indicates its huge potential in solar energy in addition to its abundant wind energy capability in the southern and eastern regions and hydro energy resources in the western and northwestern parts".

“As of 2019, resources of renewable energy in Mongolia are divided into wind energy at 72 percent, solar energy at 11 percent and hydro energy at 17 percent”.

Around 200 thousand herder families are using energy that is collected from renewable resource, which is the highest share of renewable energy consumption for traditional herding communities in the world. Between 2001 and 2011, ‘100 thousand sun lights’ program was implemented by the Government of Mongolia, World Bank and Governments of Japan and China, which successfully provided electric generators for more than 150 thousand herder families.
