Ulaanbaatar, September 5, 2025 /MONTSAME/. An exhibition titled 'Heritage of Artistry' has opened at the Union of Mongolian Artists’ Gallery to commemorate the 120th birth anniversary of People’s Painter of Mongolia and Laureate of the State Premium, Urjine Yadamsuren.

The exhibition features not only the works of the renowned artist but also rare pieces, books, and pamphlets preserved in the family’s collection, as well as appliqué art crafted by his wife. It further showcases original works by his son, Laureate of the State Premium Y. Urjnee, daughters Y. Zaya and Y. Tuya Yadamsuren, and granddaughter Y. Bulgan. More than 120 additional works by teachers and students of the 'Anima' Art Design School highlight the engagement of the younger generation.

Yadamsuren’s wife, Lunya Yadamsuren, specialized in appliqué art, while his granddaughter, Bulgan, founded the Anima Art Design School more than 30 years ago in his name and continues to carry forward his legacy.

Notably, Yadamsuren’s iconic painting The Old Horse-Fiddler is regarded by some scholars as a symbolic portrayal of Chinggis Khaan at a time when even mentioning his name was prohibited. Others argue the figure was modeled after a Buddhist monk named Tserennadmid from Gandantegchinlen Monastery. According to writer and scholar Byambyn Rinchen, who advised Yadamsuren, the painting sought to embody the essence of Mongolian culture, portraying an ancestral bard whose song bridges human life and the universe.

Yadamseren was not only the first People’s Artist of Mongolia but also the founder of the traditional Mongol painting school and a teacher who trained many disciples. His family and descendants, together with artists of the Anima Art Design School, continue to inherit and revitalize his legacy within the context of contemporary art.

The 'Heritage of Artistry' exhibition will remain open until September 10.
