Mongolia’s Expert Capacity Building Workshop with UN-ESCAP organized

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. The International Think Tank for Landlocked Developing Countries (ITTLLDC) together with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP)’s Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Disaster Risk Reduction Division, Transport Division and ESCAP’s North-East Asia Sub-regional Office organized Mongolia’s Expert Capacity Building Workshop. 


Under the theme “Addressing 2030 Agenda through Regional Economic Cooperation and Integration in Asia and the Pacific”, the workshop was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on 21-22 November 2019.


Infrastructure connectivity is at the core of regional integration and has been one of the basic requirements of economic development. The countries in each sub-region of Asia-Pacific made lots of efforts in bridging the infrastructure gaps.


The objective of the two-day expert consultation is to raise awareness and enhance knowledge and capacity of the government officials of Mongolia on trans-boundary dimensions of the 2030 Agenda through Regional Economic Cooperation and Integration in Asia and the Pacific.


The workshop was opened by Ms. Aida Karazhanova, Economic Affairs Officer of the ICT and Development Department, UN-ESCAP and Mr. Dulguun Damdin-Od, Director of Operations of the ITTLLDC.


The participants attended in three breakout sessions on ICT, Energy, and Transport Connectivity, Disaster Risk Reduction/Resilience and Infrastructure Financing moderated by the officers and consultants of the UN-ESCAP Divisions for Transport, ICT, Energy and DRR to exercise jointly on identifying the challenges, gaps, and opportunities for current infrastructure development in and propose policy measures and strategies which take into account cross-sectoral synergy, disaster resilience, social inclusion and viable financing in a trans-boundary infrastructure project, ensuring inclusive and sustainable development.


The invited target beneficiaries of the workshop were officials and experts from respective ministries and government agencies of Mongolia, responsible for policy design and infrastructure development in the following areas:


• ICT and telecommunication infrastructure connectivity

• Trans-boundary, rural and urban transport connectivity

• Electric power, oil/gas pipeline connectivity

• Social development (rural/urban, disability and gender mainstreaming)

• Disaster risk management

• Infrastructure financing

• SDG coordination
