Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. With a view to stop illegal use and circulation of diplomatic and official passports, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia has revoked 29,495 passports between 2018 and 2020.

The Mongolian government approved the revised regulation on issuing, using and keeping of diplomatic and official passports on May 27, 2020 in order to increase responsibilities of official and diplomatic passport bearers, and tighten the control and improve safekeeping rules of such passports.

The updated rule regulates diplomatic and official passport bearers must return the official or diplomatic passport to the border office immediately after completing their official travels to a foreign location and entering Mongolia, and the border office will deliver the returned passports to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For their next official travel, the passports can be given back upon a request submitted by relevant authority in charge of the travel.

The regulation also raised the responsibilities borne by diplomatic and official passport holders, and states to impose disciplinary measures to those who failed to fulfill their duties, including those who engage in illegal acts, such as drug-smuggling related matters, while working overseas and to dismiss them from civil service in compliance with other corresponding laws.
