Sukhbaatar /MONTSAME/. One of the rare exhibits currently being kept at the Ethnography Museum of Sukhbaatar aimag is this golden bowl, made by craftsman B.Khurelbaatar. The work was created out of his wish to create a golden bowl for his mother as per the various folk proverb, ‘“If you are alive, you will drink water from a golden cup.”
In an interview, Craftsman B.Khurelbaatar has said, “I created this work with my wish to have my mother drink from a golden bowl while she is still alive. While I was working as a teacher at a school in Khalzan soum when I was 21 years old in 1986, I visited a senior teacher named Tserendorj during Tsagaan Sar, and saw a porcelain cup with a dragon pattern that had silver coating. With much interest in the cup, I learned that the bowl was made by famous craftsman M.Baldan-Osor. That was how I came to know that even porcelain could be coated with gold and silver. Coating porcelain with silver takes great intelligence, patience, and skills. It took 3 months for me to make the gold bowl.”
B.Khurelbaatar graduated with a major in Craftsmanship from the College of Fine Art in 1981. He mainly specializes in crafting earrings, rings, and bowls using gold and silver.
