Collection of the National Museum of Mongolia: Model for the Statue of General D.Sukhbaatar
Art & Culture
Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. In our series of highlight artifacts
being kept at the National Museum of Mongolia, we present the model for the
statue of General D.Sukhbaatar. It was made by two craftsmen, M.Baldan-Osor and
D.Mishig, in 1971.
With a wooden base that was made using traditional joinery
techniques and painted green, the model is placed on top of an intricately
decorated red table. Alongside illustrations of floral patterns and the lotus
flower, the table is encrusted with traditional patterns using bronze. While
the statue and the surrounding lions were made of iron, its base was made with
silver.
The table’s dimensions are 46 cm in length, 37.5 cm in
width, and 14 cm in height. With each lion measuring 2x2.5 cm and the chain
length being 9 cm, there are 14 lions surrounding the statue.
The model was commissioned by the Gandantegchinlen Monastery on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Mongolian People’s Republic in 1971. It is considered as one of the rare artifacts that were made with detailed craftsmanship techniques.
