Ulaanbaatar, December 17, 2024 /MONTSAME/. A modern professional laboratory for “Artifact Preservation and Restoration” was inaugurated at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum of Mongolia on December 13, 2024.

The Laboratory was established as part of the objectives outlined in the 2020-2024 Action Plan of the Government of Mongolia, which include establishing a sustainable and efficient mechanism for the protection of cultural heritage, strengthening the preservation and protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and creating a digital archive.

Covering a total area of 250 square meters, the Laboratory is fully equipped to ensure occupational safety and is outfitted with the latest technologies and equipment for the analysis and restoration of cultural heritage. The equipment includes:

  • XRF device: determines the elemental composition of artifacts and inorganic materials;

  •  X-ray device: produces structural imaging of cultural heritage items.

  • Carbon Dioxide Pressurized Gas System: sterilizes to eliminate risks from biological microorganisms;

  •  3D scan: converts large-scale cultural artifacts into digital form, detects damage, and creates dimensional models;

  • Infrared camera: identifies invisible features and construction technologies of materials containing coal and carbon.

This Laboratory facilitates primary and advanced cleaning, strengthening, and restoration of cultural heritage and enables in-depth materials analysis and environmental risk assessment.
