Mongolist Christopher Atwood becomes Honorary doctorate of NUM

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Mongolist and professor of the University of Pennsylvania Dr. Christopher Atwood was awarded an Honorary doctorate of the National University of Mongolia (NUM), becoming the 41st scholar to be awarded the degree.
The NUM Honorary doctorate is awarded to scholars who have contributed to the development of science, culture and education, renowned peace activists, humanitarians, public figures and foreign citizens.
Dr. Christopher Atwood has criticized Western socio-cultural evolutionism and introduced a new theoretical and methodological approach to nomadic social structure research. The NUM Academic Council decided to award Dr. Christopher Atwood for the valuable contribution to the improvement of academic capacity of the Department of History and his role in the development of cooperation between NUM History Department and the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at the University of Indiana.
Christopher Atwood’s ‘Encyclopedia of Mongolians and the Mongol Empire’ based on his history teaching experience and research materials has greatly contributed to the promotion of history and culture of Mongolia.
“When I first entered the doors of the department in 1989, I never thought that I would ever be awarded by the university with such a rich history. At that time the hall seemed bit old. But now I am delighted to see that it is designed like Mongolian yurt,” said Dr. Christopher Atwood.
