“70 thousand year-old Dovon, the black wrestler” epic to be performed this Saturday

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Full version of “Doloon tumen nastai Dovon khar bokh” (70 thousand year-old Dovon, the black wrestler) epic poem will be performed at the Bogd Khaan’s Palace Museum this January 9, the 30th day of winter’s middle month according to Lunar calendar.

The storyteller A.Baldandorj, the ninth generation descendant of renowned Jilker tribe, will tell the epic poem. “70 thousand year-old Dovon, the black wrestler” and “The black boar of steppe” are usually begun to be told at twilight, when the herds of animals settle back to their fences, and continue for 24 hours.

This time, the organizers are going out of their ways of tradition compromising to the audience’s comfort and starting the story-telling from 11.00 am on Saturday morning.

After every verse of the epic, audience can expect explanations of each verse, folk dance, morin khuur, ikel khuur, harp and fife performances, as well as khoomii (throat singing).

The epic is the most extensive Mongolian popular oral literature, which can be found in all Mongolian ethnic groups, especially in Dorvod, Bayad, Uriankhai and Torguud. It is usually intoned in autumn and winter, concerning many different rites such as requesting child and wealth from heaven.
