Herders of the Gobi desert are introducing a method for breeding and growing an animal who used to live only in a relatively cool Khangai region with mountains and rocks. Thereby, the herders enjoy a big support from the province’s authorities who pay a particular attention to increasing the population of yaks in Gobi.

Since 2012 the local herders have been hosting the Mongolian Yak Festival which is called ‘Saikhani sarlag’ for the fifth time. Now this event has widened its frames and significance. This year’s festival brought together the herders from six soums.

S.Gantuul, deputy governor of Bayandalai soum

Our soum has more than 400 yaks or the half of the total number of yaks in Omnogobi province. It is important for us to be a part of the Yak Festival. We came here with yak carts./

A project for making all soums of Omnogobi province homes for yaks has been launched by the administration of the province. As a result, Bayandalai soum which was the first to implement the project, now has approximately 150 yaks.

L.Batchuluun, head of Omnogobi aimag Citizen's Representatives Khural

The “Saikhani sarlag” event helps motivating herders to breed and grow yaks in  number. On the other hand, it’s a program for attracting foreign tourists. As a tradition, we are organizing this festival in Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park .

They are herders from Bayandalai, Khurmen, Dalanzadgad, Khankhongor, Nomgon and Bulgan soums who have taken active part in the festival. The Khankhongor soum has became the winner by the total number of points. A few years ago, Omnogobi province had only 200 yaks, but now the number of yaks in this province has reached 700.
