United Nations Climate Change Conference COP29 Commences in Baku
PoliticsBaku, November 12, 2024 /MONTSAME/. The UN Climate Change Conference COP29 commenced in Baku, the Republic of Azerbaijan, under the theme “In Solidarity for a Green World” on November 11, 2024.
Azerbaijan is chairing the COP29 with two main directions "Increasing Ambition" and "Activating Action." The country calls on developed nations to make substantial progress by committing to at least double adaptation funding by 2025. COP29 will prioritize decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, facilitating climate change adaptation and reduction, supporting sustainable best practices, and implementing policies and initiatives to transition to a low-carbon economy.
Azerbaijan sees COP29 as a platform to accelerate global climate action and foster multilateral cooperation for a sustainable, resilient future.
The COP28 called on countries to develop their National Climate Adaptation Plan by 2025, accelerate its implementation, and make progress by 2030. COP29 will concentrate on assessing technical progress in adaptation and guiding countries in preparing and implementing their national adaptation plans, with conclusions expected next year.
COP29 will also emphasize the interconnections between climate, nature, land, and urban areas. The 12th Global Cities Conference, held just before COP29, will discuss local leadership in combating climate change and supporting efforts to address losses and damages.
The conference will feature thematic events on issues like finance, trade, investment, energy (peaceful recovery), science, technology, innovation, human development, youth, health, education, food, agriculture, water, urbanization, transportation, tourism, biodiversity, indigenous peoples, and gender equality.
Meetings will also include the Paris Agreement (CMA) sessions, the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).
A "Business and Philanthropy Forum" will be organized to support climate action.
Azerbaijan also plans to hold meetings with the United States and China to discuss non-carbon greenhouse gases, such as methane and other pollutants, during COP29.
