Ulaanbaatar, October 9, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Khomyn Tal National Park has officially become the 12th site in Mongolia to be designated as a UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The official certificate was presented during the training and discussion event titled “UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and Sustainable Tourism,” held at the Khomyn Tal National Park from October 7 to 9, 2025.

Khomyn Tal National Park is situated in western Mongolia's Great Lakes Depression, renowned for its diverse landscapes, including wetlands, steppes, and sand dunes, and serves as a critical habitat for wildlife, particularly the reintroduction of the Takhi (Przewalski’s horse). Established as a national park in 2020, it spans 411,403.80 hectares, covering the entire Khomyn Tal area with its boundaries extending northward along the Zavkhan River.

The certificate presentation ceremony was attended by Ts. Uranchimeg, Head of the Protected Areas Policy Division at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, B. Chinukhei, Secretary General of the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO, the management and specialists of the Khomyn Tal National Park, local government officials and residents of Zavkhan aimag, and members of the project "Supporting Ecosystem Conservation through Protected Areas."

Other Mongolian sites already included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves are Dornod Mongol, Mongol Daguur, Bogd Khan Mountain, the Great Gobi, Uvs Lake Basin, Lake Khuvsgul, Khustai Nuruu, Lake Khar Us, Onon-Balj National Park, and Toson Khustai Nature Reserve.

UNESCO’s "Man and the Biosphere" (MAB) Programme, launched in 1971, connects natural and social sciences with education, economics, and capacity-building to promote biodiversity conservation, sustainable use of natural resources, and overall sustainable development.

The designation of Khomyn Tal as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve was approved during the 37th session of the International Coordinating Council of the MAB Programme, held from September 26 to 28, 2025.
