U.Khurelsukh: Mongolia to support every effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase its absorption

Climate Change Conference (COP26) being held in Glasgow, UK, delivered a speech
and expressed position of Mongolia at the plenary meeting on
November 1.
Extending his congratulations to the government of Great Britain for hosting the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, President U.Khurelsukh noted, it is universally acknowledged that in order to achieve the 2050 goals set out in the Paris Agreement, it is necessary to fight together against the climate change by reconsidering the measures being taken by the countries and developing a comprehensive policy. "This particular period of time when humanity facing Covid-19 pandemic reminds us the necessity of changing public attitudes towards nature and environment, and taking decisive actions for intensifying green development.
In his statement, he also noted that Mongolia, one
of the countries impacted by climate change, fully supports
the efforts of the international community to reduce and increase absorption of
greenhouse gas emissions, and reaffirmed its commitments to the Paris Agreement
and to mobilize every possible resource to fulfill them.
He announced that Mongolia raised its target to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, a main cause of climate change, to 22.7 per cent by
2030, through updating its Nationally Determined Contributions, and noted that
through introducing advanced technology and innovation and increasing necessary
funding, there is an opportunity to increase the commitment to 27.2 per cent.
Furthermore, the President announced that as a national contribution to the international community efforts to combat climate change, increase the absorption of greenhouse gases, reduce poverty or combat desertification through economic means, protect the health of children and women who are the most vulnerable to climate change, and improve overall quality of life, Mongolia has launched a national campaign to plant billions of trees by 2030 and decided to spend at least 1 per cent of its GDP annually to mitigate adverse effects of climate change and desertification.
