Second phase of Earthquake disaster protection project to be implemented

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Chief of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Major General G.Ariunbuyan received a delegation led by Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Mongolia Tamura Eriko yesterday.
The number of earthquake occurrences in Mongolia is increasing year by year, which creates a need to pay attention on improving disaster response capacity, preparedness and risk reduction. The NEMA successfully realized ‘Strengthening the National Capacity for Earthquake Disaster Protection and Prevention in Mongolia’ project in 2016-2019 in cooperation with the JICA and a proposal was put forth to JICA to implement the second phase of the project.
During the meeting, Chief of NEMA G.Ariunbuyan noted that the first phase of the project gave significant contribution to improve the capacity to collect and process earthquake disaster information and enhance correlation between the stakeholders. He also highlighted the achievements in developing seismic assessment methods for buildings and infrastructure, disaster protection training materials for schools and kindergartens. It was also noted that the project was significant for creating favorable training environment and conditions to strengthen disaster protection capacity of citizens.
The note for the preparation of the draft document to start the second phase of the project was signed by NEMA Chief G.Ariunbuyan and Chief Representative Tamura Eriko.
The second phase of the project will focus on raising public awareness of the need to improve quality of buildings, developing relevant rules and regulations, building the capacity of engineers and technicians, supporting the disaster protection capacity of citizens, and creating training materials, reports NEMA.
