Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ In accordance with an order to the D.Oyunkhorol, Acting Minister of Environment and Tourism, the marmot hunting with household and industrial purposes was prohibited for three years from September 22, 2017.

Since 1990 in times of transition into the market economy, the marmot population rapidly declined. At that time the number of animal was about 15 million heads, and it plummeted into five millions by 2001.

In 2005, 2006 and 2014, an action was taken to prohibit the marmot hunting for three years in accordance with an order of the Minister of Environment, and later it gave some positive results shown increases of the animal in several provinces. Moreover, according to reports from localities, marmots have appeared in some places where the animal was considered to be decreased into zero.

Although the local administrations have reported about an increase of the animal’s population, the Minister’s order came into effect to prohibit the marmot hunting all over the territories of Mongolia in order to maximize the animal’s number.
