President meets UNCCD Executive Secretary
PoliticsUlaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. President U.Khurelsukh held a meeting with Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Ibrahim Thiaw.
At the outset, the President thanked the UNCCD for making a decision to organize the COP17 in Mongolia in 2026, while expressing commitment to fulfill this honorable role with dignity as the head of state.
UNCCD Executive Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw said that the UNCCD will provide all-round support, give methodological advice and work closely together with the Mongolian side as part of the organization of the COP17.
The parties emphasized that afforestation and rehabilitation are of great importance in reducing the impact of climate change, desertification, yellow dust storms, and soil degradation, which are common challenges of the countries of the world.
The President then expressed readiness to cooperate with the countries around the world in the direction of successfully implementing the 'One Billion Trees' initiative, protecting the environment and making substantial progress to achieve SDGs.
Furthermore, it was noted that it is of great significance to
implement measures to reduce land degradation, and combat desertification and dust
storms in the Northeast Asia region, for example, to reforest the southern part
of Mongolia and mitigate sand migration.
