E-Visa issue to be resolved this year

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ “Currently, there are 23,737 registered citizens of 122 countries living in Mongolia” reported Mongolian Immigration Agency during a press conference today, January 16.

At the press conference, D.Murun, Director of the Immigration Agency presented relevant statistics on immigration in 2016. “In accordance with the Law of Mongolia on Border which was revised in 2016, checkpoint functions are being transferred to General Authority for Border Protection starting from February this year”, he informed.

The Immigration Agency operates 6 offices with 4 regional offices in provinces and 2 offices in Buyant-Ukhaa, Ulaanbaatar and Zamiin-Uud, Mongolia’s southern port soum. There are 46 border ports on national level, and 27 of them are in constant operation.

There are 23,737 registered citizens of 122 countries in Mongolia, and the majority of them are Chinese nationals. In particular, 8,707 citizens of People’s Republic of China, 3,720 citizens of the Russian Federation and 2,558 citizens of the Republic of Korea are residing in the country.

In 2016, 450 citizens of 27 countries were deported from Mongolia. Foreign nationals being deported also pay monetary fine for violating Mongolian laws and regulations; MNT 1 billion was collected in the form of the fine in 2016.

“We are realizing an E-Immigration project which is worth USD 5 million. In the first phase of the project, E-gate has been introduced. The second phase of the project will be executed in 2017-2018. Our agency will enhance the E-Immigration project and resolve the issue of E-visa in 2017. Foreign nationals will be able to submit their documents online”, D.Murun said.
