Celebration of 60th anniversary of Mongolia’s accession to the UNESCO discussed

Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. The National Committee for World Heritage, responsible for ensuring the national implementation of the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention, held its regular meeting at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs today, March 25.


In his opening speech, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the National Committee for World Heritage B.Munkhjin emphasized that since Mongolia acceded to the World Heritage Convention in 1990, five heritage sites have been inscribed on the World Heritage List and 12 have been included in the tentative list, and gave an detailed information on properties that the country intends to consider for nomination.


Concerning the nomination of ‘Highlands of Mongol Altai’, which is currently in the tentative list, the meeting discussed the technical assessment plan to be carried out in Mongolia by ICOMOS and IUCN. The participants also discussed issues regarding the safeguarding of the landscapes of Dauria, which is a transboundary natural heritage site, the Lake Baikal and the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Mongolia’s accession to UNESCO and 50th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention.


The Convention concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO on 16 November 1972 with aims of safeguarding, promoting and preserving the natural and cultural heritage, and 194 countries have acceded to the Convention.
