Ulaanbaatar, October 8, 2024 /MONTSAME/. Prime Minister of Mongolia Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai visited the newly expanded nine-story, 180-bed neonatal, obstetrics, and gynecology facility of the Khuree Maternity Hospital, as well as the newly renovated Reproductive and Pediatric Advisory Polyclinic of the National Centre for Maternal and Child Health of Mongolia (NCMCH).
During his 2021 visit to the hospital, Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene included the funding necessary for the expansions, equipment, and renovations in the State Budget. As a result, on October 7, 2022, the expansion work of the Khuree Maternity Hospital commenced. “Uguumur Bayan Denj” LLC, the general contractor of the expansion project, completed the modern medical facility with a budget of MNT 45 billion ahead of schedule, meeting current quality standards.
The building and equipment of Khuree Maternity Hospital, also known as Mongolia's Second Maternity Hospital, had become outdated, and bed shortages were a long-standing issue, despite having served thousands of mothers and women in Ulaanbaatar for many years. During this time, the hospital delivered more than 500,000 babies. Director of the hospital B. Munkhsaikhan explained to the Prime Minister, how the expansion of the hospital, for the first time in 65 years, would significantly improve maternal and neonatal services.
For the first time, the Government of Mongolia invested MNT 1.0 trillion into the healthcare sector in 2021. This investment matched the total funding allocated to the sector over the previous 12 years. The Prime Minister highlighted that part of this budget was allocated for maternity hospital expansions. He congratulated the contractors and medical staff for completing the project swiftly and wished them continued success.
The Prime Minister also visited the NCMCH, the largest national reproductive and pediatric advisory polyclinic, in 2021, pledging to resolve its funding needs for new equipment and expansion. The project was completed on schedule. After reviewing Khuree Maternity Hospital’s new facilities, the Prime Minister visited NCMCH’s newly expanded outpatient clinics and congratulated the doctors, staff, and patients.
Between 2021 and 2023, the Government invested MNT 83.2 billion into NCMCH. With funding from the State Budget, a new four-story, 2,772-square-meter Perinatology Center for the Obstetrics and Gynecology Outpatient Clinic was constructed. Additionally, a new six-story, 9,000-square-meter Pediatric Outpatient Clinic is now 85 percent complete.
The NCMCH currently has 680 beds and provides medical services nationwide through its 55 departments in pediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology, employing over 1,000 doctors and staff. Twelve departments of the hospital have been fully renovated, with funding for the rest of the departments included in the 2025 State Budget. Director of the NCMCH Sh. Altantuya informed the Prime Minister that renovating the maternity ward and including 10 rooms where families can stay together greatly improved patient satisfaction.
Over the past three years, the Government of Mongolia has invested MNT 175.3 billion into maternal and child healthcare, with MNT 79.1 billion allocated for construction, MNT 31 billion for major renovations, and MNT 65.2 billion for the procurement of modern equipment. This funding has supported the expansion of Khuree Maternity Hospital, the National Burn Center under the National Traumatology and Orthopedics Research Center (NTORC), a 300-bed general hospital in Arkhangai aimag, the Reproductive Advisory Polyclinic at NCMCH, the “National Center for Maternal, Neonatal, and Women's Health-2” in Yarmag area, and the construction of modern health centers across soums and aimags, as reported by the Media and Public Relations Department of the Government of Mongolia.
