Mongolia wants to establish its base in Antarctica

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Chairman of the Water Association of Mongolia Dr D.Batmonkh Tuesday said the association plans to ask the government USD 250 thousand in the first turn for establishing a base on Livingston Island of Antarctica.

Mongolia joined the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) last year, he noted and said he had studied a possibility together with the Bulgarian researchers of erecting a base of Mongolia. If the government supports this idea resolving the financial issue, Mongolia will have big scientific object and become able to run water and mineral resources reseraches, Batmonkh said.

As of present, some 20 countries intend to establish their bases in Antarctica, ten of them have already created bases, for example, Spain, who spent for this work one million US dollars.

During works in Antarctica, the Mongolian scientists settled borderlines for its base and documented heights and locations of the place by photo and video, Dr Batmonh added. 

Mongolia joined Antarctica research works in 1972.
