Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Gandantegchinlen Monastery, the center of Mongolian Buddhists, is one of the most visited tourists’ sightseeing in Ulaanbaatar. The capital administration is to establish a tourist complex zone at the monastery area, implementing ‘Gandan Khuree Street” project.

Yesterday, May 25, Governor of the capital and Ulaanbaatar city Mayor S.Batbold visited the area, getting acquainted with the project plans. “Gandantegchinlen Monastery area is the most peculiar place in Ulaanbaatar. Since my appointment to the capital Governor, I have paid attention on how to change the area more comfortable and attractive, making it a Mongolian cultural heritage and tourist site. According to the General City Plan, the area would be expanded into a religious, cultural heritage and tourist center. There are obstacles related to freeing land to start the work. Because as land around the monastery area is considered highly valuable, private companies have interests to buy land and sell it to the capital at a much higher price. However, residents are eager to live in a comfortable environment. Therefore, we are working to improve the living conditions of the citizens and to create them possibilities to earn money taking advantage of tourist zone”.

68 families will be engaged to land freeing and on the first stage, 25 families have moved to  temporary housing. These families will move back to new houses built on their land after the project completion. According to ‘Gandan Khuree street’ project plan, the tourist zone will have a town with low and mid-rise buildings with mixed traditional and modern architecture, 4-story houses with traditional architecture for housing, antique and religious item shops, wax museum, restaurants  with traditional Mongolian cuisine of the old capital.  Shopping and service area will cover 1.9 ha of land.

“- A study shows over 400 thousand tourists come to Ulaanbaatar in a year and their favorite destination is Gandantegchinlen Monastery. We planned to establish a tourist zone based on the study. The tourist zone will cover area from Bombogor trade center to a Modnii 2 site and construction and other renovation works are scheduled to complete in 2018-2019” said chairman of ger district infrastructure of the capital M.Ganbaatar.
