“5 million tons of coal are projected to be exported through container terminals each month”

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Along with the members of the Cabinet, the Prime Minister is currently working in Umnugobi aimag. In the framework of the objective to revive the country’s border checkpoints as a part of the New Revival Policy, a ceremony took place for the launch of the construction of a terminal for container transportation yesterday on May 27. During the ceremony, Minister of Mining and Heavy Industry G.Yondon gave journalists information regarding the works being carried out.
“As of today, there is a significant amount of coal that has accumulated at deposits due to lack of pathways for export. In the framework of the ‘Revival of Border Checkpoints’, railroads will begin to have more traffic, increasing the responsibility of miners.
As countries around the world have begun to implement policies on shifting away from coal, we are faced with the necessity to race with time. Within its frames, it is being planned to urgently put the country’s above-ground deposits into economic circulation. Works to utilize underground deposits will also be launched at the same time.
Furthermore, amendments were recently made to this year’s state budget. In the first half of 2021, plans for exports were cut by 50 percent. This led to the implementation of ‘Green Gateway’ temporary regulation from August 1 last year. As a result, about 5 million tons of coal were exported over the course of a single month. Yet, it is this exact amount of coal that has been exported this year so far.
In the framework of the New Revival Policy, we expect 5 million tons of coal to be exported through terminals for container transportation in a month. As the Gashuunsukhait border checkpoint is crucial for the export of mining products, construction works are being launched today in order to remove the “blockage”,” said the Minister.
