Weather Warning: Flood Alert in the Capital City and Mountainous Regions

Ulaanbaatar, July 8, 2023 /MONTSAME/. Flooding warnings have been issued as heavy rains continue to drench the capital city Ulaanbaatar and some eastern and western aimags of Mongolia. Forecasters warn of heavy rains on Naadam Festival days, July 10-13 in in Ulaanbaatar and mountainous regions.


The water level of the Selbe River and  Tuul River, which pass through Ulaanbaatar city, specifically Tuul River water level increased by over 10 centimetres, reaching 288 cm as of yesterday night. It means river level exceeds the dangerous flood level by 28 cm.


According to the measurement on July 08, 2023 at 06:00 pm, the water level of the Tuul River reached 311 cm in the vicinity of Ulaanbaatar, which is 51 cm above the dangerous level. Therefore relevant organizations, including the State Emergency Commission, the National Emergency Management Agency of Mongolia are warning people about the danger of flooding.



The Tuul River is 704 kilometres or 437 miles long and drains an area of 49,840 square kilometres or 19,240 square miles. The water level of the Tuul River in the basin around Altanbulag soum of Tuv aimag surpassed the dangerous level by 50 cm.


According to the latest report, more than 20 thousand citizens of 31 thousand households in 26 districts of 6 districts such as Sukhbaatar, Bayanzurkh, Khan-Uul, Songinohairkhan, Chingeltei, 11 thousand streets and 108 buildings and houses have been affected by floods.



In Ulaanbaatar city, over 400 Mongolian army soldiers in addition to over 5,000 emergency officers, and 400 vehicles are working in 18 locations of the capital city districts for the flooding rescue and mitigation measures including,  removing people  out of risk areas, strengthening and building flood protective embankments.
