Uliastai, April 22, 2026 /MONTSAME/. In Zavkhan aimag, the first foal of the year has been born to a herd of Przewalski’s horse, Takhi, at the Khomiin Tal National Park.

The foal was born on April 20, 2026, to a mare named “Saiga” in the herd led by the stallion “Sarnii Gerel” (Moonlight). It is a male foal. With this birth, the largest herd in Khomiin Tal has grown even bigger. In 2025, the first foal of the year from the same herd was named “Moonrider.”

Khomiin Tal is one of the three main areas in Mongolia where takhi horses are being reintroduced into the wild. This work has been carried out since 2004 in cooperation with France.

Currently, more than 150 takhi horses live in the reserve, and all of them are named. Rangers and researchers regularly record and monitor their locations and herd movements.

Safeguarding and reintroducing these horses requires a lot of funding. To support this, a “foal adoption” program is organized every spring. People can donate money and give a name to a newborn foal.

Participants in the program can donate a certain amount of money and give a name to a foal. The foal is then registered in the international studbook of Przewalski’s horse and receives a unique identification number. Donors also get a certificate and updates about the foal twice a year, according to Munkhbat Ts., Head of the Administration of the Khomiin Tal National Park.
