Ulaanbaatar, May 9, 2025 /MONTSAME/. International Masters of Sport Battogtokh Altangerel and Batkhishig Baldorj are currently ascending Mount Everest, the highest summit on Earth at 8,848 meters above sea level.

Mongolian mountaineers are progressing via the southern route from the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, methodically establishing high-altitude camps and fixing ropes in preparation for their summit bid. Twenty years ago, Honored Athlete of Mongolia Usukhbayar Gotovdirij became the first Mongolian to set foot on Everest; in 2011, Gangaamaa Badamgarav followed as the first Mongolian woman to reach its summit. Since then, twelve Mongolian climbers have summited Everest, though two tragically perished during their descent. Should Battogtokh and Batkhishig succeed, they will become the 15th and 16th Mongolians to stand atop Everest.

Meanwhile, International Master of Sport Ariunzul Chuluunbaatar is climbing Makalu—at 8,485 meters the fifth-highest peak in the world—having previously summited Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). Candidate Master of Sport Ganbayar Jargalsaikhan is preparing to tackle Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), the ninth-highest mountain, in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Of the 14 peaks worldwide exceeding 8,000 meters, Mongolian mountaineers have now successfully conquered nine.
