Mongolians win medals in int’l mathematics Olympiad

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Mongolian secondary school team successfully competed in the 57th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) held July 6-16 in Hong Kong.

The Mongolian team grabbed two silver and two bronze medals, while other two students received honorable mentions. As the team results, Mongolia was ranked 33rd out of 109 participant nations. The US team was the leader at this year’s Olympiad, winning six gold medals.

The IMO is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating.

It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from five continents. The IMO Advisory Board ensures that the competition takes place each year and that each host country observes the regulations and traditions of the IMO.

After results of the 2016 IMO, Mongolia has collected two gold, 21 silver, 58 bronze medals and 49 honorable mentions.
