Unitel Group's Initiative "First Street Named After Woman" Gains Public Support
Society
International Women's Day is a
day that highlights the achievements and contributions of women around the
world and calls on people to move forward together to create a better future
for all.
Therefore, on International
Women's Day 2024, Unitel Group not only familiarized the achievements of
Mongolian women to the new generation but also launched the initiative to have streets
named after women.
Representing thousands of
women who took part in the creation of modern Mongolia, Unitel Group presented
to the younger generation the stories of eight women. From the first Mongolian
astronomer to the first surgeon, they are historical figures who secured
first-time achievements and advanced the development of their fields. Specifically,
L. Ider, a Mongolian diplomat who led UN subcommittees in the 1970s and 1980s and
was at the forefront of protecting women's rights worldwide, and D. Dumberel,
the first Mongolian woman world champion – who should be honored and remembered
by present-day Mongolians were chosen as the main characters of this work.
Although there are numerous women with historical merit like them, there is currently no street named after a Mongolian woman in Ulaanbaatar. As the names of the streets in the city we live in are a part of our daily life and an expression of history and culture, Unitel Group launched the #First Street Named After Woman initiative to have streets named after historical women to popularize the good deeds of these women and received public support.
In support of Unitel's #FirstWomen's Street initiative, the Women for Change NGO has announced that they are starting influencing policy actions to name the streets of Ulaanbaatar after women.
