Ulaanbaatar, December 22, 2025 /MONTSAME/. For the first time from Mongolia, the Bayangol district of the Capital city and Bayan-Undur soum of Orkhon aimag have joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities and received their certificates of membership on December 22, 2025.
This marks a clear indication that Mongolia’s lifelong learning policy is being effectively implemented at the local level and has gained international recognition.
Established in 2013 at the initiative of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, the Network currently comprises 498 cities from 91 countries. In 2025 alone, 72 cities from 46 countries were newly admitted, including two cities from Mongolia.
Bayan-Undur soum and Bayangol district met the criteria of a Learning City through their concrete, citizen-oriented initiatives based on education, participation, and partnerships, thereby becoming members of the international network. The certification signifies long-term commitments and responsibilities, including ensuring accessible and high-quality learning opportunities, supporting vulnerable groups, and measuring and reporting outcomes.
The UNESCO National Commission of Mongolia expressed its appreciation for the active cooperation among the Ministry of Education, the General Authority for Education, local administrations, and Lifelong Learning Centers in successfully facilitating membership in the Network.
