Ulaanbaatar, March 23, 2025 /MONTSAME/. On March 21, 2025, the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring of Mongolia organized a Scientific Conference on “Addressing Challenges in Glacier and Ice Preservation and Early Warning Systems Together” in recognition of World Water Day and World Meteorological Day.

This year’s theme highlights the urgent need to protect rapidly melting glaciers due to climate change and to enhance early warning systems for increasingly frequent natural disasters.

Director of the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring E. Battulga underscored the rapid pace of global climate change, noting that 2024 was the hottest year on record, leading to more frequent disasters. To enhance Mongolia’s disaster preparedness, the Agency plans a major technological upgrade, including the use of state-of-the-art computing systems in meteorological operations. Moreover, in partnership with the "DDishTV" company, the Agency will begin directly delivering early warning messages to rural communities, improving accessibility beyond existing platforms such as E-Mongolia and banking applications.

At the Conference, experts and scientists stressed the importance of improving monitoring and forecasting through satellite and ground-based observations. To strengthen disaster prediction capabilities, the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring is cooperating with the United Nations Development Programme's ADAPT Project to install a new supercomputer. This advanced system will enhance the accuracy and timeliness of early warnings, providing better spatial resolution and increasing the availability of high-quality meteorological products for economic and social use.
