Presidential candidates debate as election campaigns close

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On June 24, Saturday, presidential candidates appeared on Mongolian National Broadcaster for a live debate as they closed their election campaigns.
It was the first and only face off between the Mongolian People’s Party candidate M.Enkhbold, the Democratic Party candidate Kh.Battulga and the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party candidate S.Ganbaatar since they kicked off their election campaigns on June 6.
The two-hour TV debate began with the question on the candidates’ opinion on political parties, and proceeded with specific questions for each candidate.

When asked about what he had done for Mongolia, M.Enkhbold talked about his contribution to promoting Mongolia abroad such as the registration of national Naadam festival by UNESCO. He also mentioned about the refurbishment of the central square and increase of fund for athletes during his tenure as Prime Minister.
Answering the same question, Kh.Battulga touched upon his role in bringing back the ownership of Tavan Tolgoi deposit, construction of Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue and ‘New soum’ project to support rural development. He also mentioned how judoka N.Tuvshinbayar’s victory at Beijing Olympics unified Mongolians after the July 1 riot of 2008. (Kh.Battulga has long led Mongolian Judo Federation)
For his part, S.Ganbaatar brought up his activities directed at letting the Mongolian people understand the Oyu Tolgoi contracts. He talked about his repetitive role in increasing wages and pensions. “I initiated 11 laws and had them adopted”, he said.
The candidates also confronted selective questions concerning controversies surrounding their political career and personal lives.
As such, the candidates closed their election campaigns which ran for 18 days with the face off last Saturday. The candidates destined to each 21 aimags of Mongolia during their election campaigns.
