Khovd /MONTSAME/ The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Mongolia Programme Office has organized a promotional campaign for the protection of saiga antelope in several soums of Khovd and Gobi-Altai aimags.

The campaign reached herding households in Mankhan, Zereg, Chandmani and Darvi soums of Khovd aimag and Khukhmorit, Bayan-Uul and Tugrug soums of Gobi-Altai aimag.

In addition to the promotional activities directed at increasing awareness on saiga antelope protection, the campaigners also handed over first-aid kits to the herders who faced wintering difficulty.

“The last winter saw a lot of snowfall in the saiga antelope habitat. After the drought of last summer, wild animals faced lack of grazing land,” said the herders, appreciating the efforts of the WWF Mongolia Programme Office.

As a result of collective efforts by the WWF Mongolia Programme Office and other parties, Mongolia’s saiga antelope population reached 14 thousand in 2014, with the habitat expanding by 13 percent. However, after the spread of plague in late 2016, a census conducted in March, 2017, revealed only about 5,000 saiga antelopes in Mongolia.
