Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ A discussion themed ‘Renewable Energy-Climate Change’ was held on April 11. Minister of Energy Ts.Davaasuren, Minister of Environment and Tourism N.Tserenbat, Energy Regulatory Commission authorities, researchers of the Nature Conservation Fund and representatives of renewable energy companies operating in Mongolia took part in the discussion.
“Renewable energy plays major role in reducing climate change. During today's discussion, renewable energy issues were discussed, along with the efficient use of financial mechanisms, bringing positive changes to the feed-in tariff and reducing negative impacts of climate change by developing renewable energy. The main issue of renewable energy is the price. Renewable energy prices are high due to big amount of investment to it. However, tariff discounts are possible as various mechanisms including international grants are being used in the renewable energy” said director of the Public Administration Department of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism Kh.Batjargal.
Chairman of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) A.Tleikhan noted that definite progress has been observed in the sector by implementing renewable energy projects and supporting private sector through cooperation with the Government, donor countries, international financial and development organizations

Major projects and programs on increasing use of renewable energy including sunlight, water and wind are planned. According to the State policy on energy sector approved by the Parliament in 2015, the share of renewable energy in total energy production targeted to reach 20 percent by 2020 and 30 by 2030. Currently Mongolia's renewable energy capacity is 120 MW.
Chairman A.Tleikhan also emphasized that although Mongolia has a great potential for renewable energy, there are some issues including lack of policy regulations and professional staff.
