Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Cabinet has backed a bill that will authorize free land allocation to Mongolian citizens-families for the next ten years.

Specifically, the amendment to the Law on Allocation of Land to Mongolian Citizens for Ownership will allow Mongolian citizens acquire land ownership for family needs for free only once until 2028. When adopted, the amendment will take effect on May 1, 2018.

The amendment also introduces new provisions and arrangements dealing with necessary terminology, guidelines on land allocation, full rights of a government body in charge of land affairs, land ownership applications, criteria for land ownership and migration data.

The Cabinet made the decision to submit the bill to Parliament at its regular meeting on April 18.

The Law on Allocation of Land to Mongolian Citizens for Ownership was first adopted on June 27, 2002 and took effect on May 1, 2003, since when it has been amended seven times. In three of the amendments, the provision on one-time land ownership for family needs was extended by five years.

As of 2017, 18.3 percent of the total population and 62.54 percent of total households obtained land for family needs.
