26 thousand people involved in forest protection

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ As a result of the Sustainable Forest Management to Improve Livelihood of Local Communities project 1180 communities have been established and 26 thousand people involved in forest protection.  The project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) is to be complete this year and the project outcome workshop was organized on May 29. 

The project aimed at improving capacity of forest cooperatives’ activities, promoting their livelihoods by producing woodworks and providing opportunity for them to learn from the technological advances was implemented in aimags of forest region including Zavkhan, Khuvsgul, Khentii, Selenge and Bulgan.

Additionally, Tunkhel village of Mandal soum in Selenge aimag was chosen as an exemplary village. As a result, seven forest cooperatives were established at the village. The cooperative members worked joining in a community, cleaning up the fallen trees and supplying dead trees as a fuel to steam boilers, making wooden roof tiles and selling homemade jams from forest berries.

“This is a result of trainings on natural resource use and logging technology conducted within the framework of the project” said National consultant of the project L.Erdenetugs.

The project started in 2015 in order to stop illegal logging and establish voluntary communities with participation of locals to protect forests.
